bataille essays Born in France in 1897, Georges Bataille was a very creative, controversial and strange person. A librarian by 2010 2 prose essay, profession, he wrote a great many poems, essays and available books during his life (he died in 1962). Some of questions, these writings were novels; most were works of critical theory (non-fiction writings on society and politics). Bataille's name is often closely associated with Freudian psychoanalysis, Surrealism, Marxism and 2 prose essay the occult. Because of the very strong and questions essay mostly acknowledged influence of Bataille's various concepts and methodological approaches on two fishermen morley callaghan essay the writings of such younger and sometimes better known critical theorists as Guy Debord (potlatch), Jean Baudrillard (gift exchange), Michel Foucault (the order of things), and Jacques Derrida (nonlogical difference), almost all of Bataille's many books have been published in English translations by university presses in 2010 essay America. No doubt many of these books are required reading in courses in literary theory, the history of modern art, sociology, political economy, psychology, and ethnology.
Originally written in French and privately published in questions 2 prose essay 1949, the first part of Bataille's massive trilogy La Part Maudite was re-printed by Les Editions de Minuit in 2 prose essay 1967. Believe? It was re-printed again in the 1970s, when Gallimard began publishing Bataille's Oeuvres Completes (nine volumes so far). In 1989, Zone Books in New York City published a hardcover translation under the title The Accursed Share, Volume I: Consumption (the trilogy as a whole is subtitled An Essay on General Economy). In 1998, Zone published a paperback edition of the book, as well as both hardcover and paperback editions of translations of Volumes II and III. 2010 Questions 2 Prose? Though we have only commented upon information, them once before, Bataille's books, especially the ones on 2010 questions essay art and politics, have long been of interest to us here at NOT BORED! We were excited by 2010 essay, the prospect of reading Volume I (hereafter referred to as The Accursed Share ) because it clearly marked a return to the subject matter -- unproductive (wasteful) expenditures, human sacrifices, potlatch, and the critique of 2 prose essay, classical utility -- Bataille first explored in one of our favorite essays, The Notion of Expenditure (written in 1933 and published in English translation in Visions of Excess, a collection of essays Bataille wrote between 1927 and 1939). It's pretty damn strange that Bataille's Theoretical Introduction to The Accursed Share mentions neither The Notion of Expenditure nor any of two fishermen callaghan essay, his previous writings. Essay? It's as if (Bataille wants us to believe that) this is the very first time that he is pointing out that 1) classical political economy is built on write a report the unquestioned and yet demonstrably false premises that scarcity is the defining aspect of the economy, that individuals will always act according to 2010 2 prose essay, their self-interest, and quotations on essay technology that self-interest always involves growth, the accumulation of wealth, and essay a reduction of waste; but that 2) a study of non-European, non-Christian cultures shows that surplus is actually the defining aspect of the economy, that growth can never be an end in tuition itself, that wealth can indeed be accumulated but precisely for the purposes of deliberately wasting it in spectacular displays of power (human sacrifices, wars, religious monuments, festivals and mass entertainments); and that, in any case, 3) waste is unavoidable. And Bataille (almost) gets away with it, too: he introduces so much new material, material not covered in questions essay The Notion of Expenditure -- Islam, Buddhism and the 13th Dalai Lama, and the connections between Calvinism and Marxism -- that his 1933 essay is apparently outmoded, superceded, discarded and 2010 questions essay forgotten. Bataille has discretely tried to place The Notion of Expenditure into the proverbial Trashcan of History, hoping that no one would notice or care.
Bataille also wants to pretend (wants us to believe) that the entire book, all of The Accursed Share, might also have ended up in questions the trash. In his preface, he writes: Writing this book in which I was saying that energy finally can only be wasted, I myself was using my energy, my time, working; my research answered in a fundamental way the desire to add to the amount of tuition available, wealth acquired for 2010 essay, mankind. Should I say that under these conditions I sometimes could only respond to the truth of my book and tuition assignments available could not go on writing it? A book that no one awaits, that answers no formulated question, that the author would not have written if he had followed its lesson to the letter -- such is the 2 prose, oddity that today I offer the who to, reader. This invites distrust at the outset [. Questions 2 Prose Essay? ] It's a fitting conceit, a pretty good joke, and it's irony certainly brings a smile; but it does indeed invite distrust at the outset. Note the (intentional?) ambiguity of Should I say that under these conditions I sometimes could only respond to the truth of my book and could not go on writing it? The only response to this evasively rhetorical question is: Look, Georges: You should say that you stopped writing it, but only if it's true.
If it isn't true, then you shouldn't say it. Bataille doesn't say why he decided to put aside his reservations and complete all three volumes of The Accursed Share. He certainly didn't finish Volume I because of the uniqueness of the Marshall Plan, which is the subject of its very last chapter, or because of the unprecedented scale and extent of the devastation during the morley, Second World War. Bataille finished the book because, like Breton, Aragon, Eluard and others in the Surrealist movement, he'd become a Stalinist (15 years after the 2010 essay, others!), and morley callaghan because Stalin -- the whole Soviet Union, even -- really needed people like Georges to come to its defense. Though many radical artists and intellectuals in France and elsewhere in 2010 questions 2 prose essay Europe were Trotskyists in two fishermen callaghan essay 1949 (Cornelius Castoriadis, for example), very few were open supporters of Stalinism. Andre Breton and 2 prose most of the others had distanced themselves from write or openly denounced Stalinism (if not the Communist Party, as well) because of the Soviet Union's murderous campaign to collectivize the kulaks in 1937 (an infamous example of what Karl Marx called primitive accumulation) and because of the Hitler-Stalin Pact of 1939. The same may be said for 1967, when The Accursed Share was first re-printed: though there (still) were Trotskyists in questions essay France, there were very few Stalinists. Those who were Stalinists -- Jean Paul Sartre, among them -- were denounced by the Situationist International.
But there is no denunciation of Bataille in Internationale Situationniste, Guy Debord's La Societe du Spectacle or one of the books by his one-time colleague, Henri Lefebvre. Essay I This? The only thing Allan Stoekl -- the editor and translator of the 2010 questions 2 prose, Visions of Excess collection -- can say on the subject of Batatille's post-War writings is: In his later writings (of the 1940s and 50s) Bataille is no longer overtly Marxist. While this remark might be taken as indirect evidence that Stalin himself wasn't much of a Marxist, it doesn't even admit that Bataille was a Stalinist. In the chapter called Soviet Industrialization, Bataille writes: The collectivization of lands is in theory the most questionable part of the changes in economic structure. There is no doubt that it cost dearly; indeed, it is regarded as the cruelest moment of an endeavour that was never mild. But if one judges this development of Russian resources in a general way, one risks forgetting the essay, conditions in which it was begun and the necessity that compelled it [. Questions 2 Prose Essay? ] These considerations had all the more force since industrialization always demands a large displacement of the population to the cities [. ] But a sudden [industrial] development creates a call for manpower to which the response cannot long be delayed. Only agrarian collectivism, coupled with mechanization, could ensure the dissertation, maintenance and questions growth of agricultural production; without them, the proliferation of factories would have only divertissant led to disequilibrium [. ] Situations arise in 2010 2 prose which, wrongly or rightly, acts of cruelty, harming individuals, seem negligible in quotations on essay technology view of the misfortunes they are meant to avoid [. ] Today it is easy to see that the Soviets organizing production were replying in advance to a question of life and death.
I do not mean to justify, but to understand; given that purpose, it seems superficial to me to dwell on horror [. ] Apparently the Soviet Union, and, even, speaking more generally, Russia -- owing to the czarist legacy -- would not have been able to survive without a massive allocation of its resources to industrial equipment. Apparently, if this allocation had been even a little less rigorous, even a little less hard to bear than Stalin made it, Russia could have foundered [. ] And we would rather die than establish a reign of terror; but a single man can die, and an immense population is faced with no other possibility than life. The Russian world had to make up for the backwardness of 2010 2 prose, czarist society and this was necessarily so painful, it demanded an effort so great, that the hard way -- in believe essay every sense the most costly way -- became its only essay solution. What's most striking about this chilling passage -- aside from believe i this its monstrous cynicism -- is the fact that, despite the questions 2 prose, passing reference to costliness in the last sentence, it has nothing to do with the discussions that introduced them. Forced social displacement on a massive scale, systematic theft of 2010 2 prose essay, land by the State and 2010 2 prose mass murder (terror) aren't understood here in scientific or empirical terms, that is, in terms of the structural unavoidability of waste and the stark contrast between primitive practices such as potlatch and the puritanical maintenance of accounts in 2010 questions 2 prose essay modern capitalist society. Ironically, these terms only come (back) into play when Bataille turns to the Marshal Plan, which he asserts was a potlatch-like response -- not to the poverty created by the defeat of the Nazi regime -- but to 2010 2 prose essay, the success of the essay, Russian Army at questions 2 prose essay, Stalingrad.
No, Bataille justifies Stalinist terror in the calculating, moralizing, ideological terms of political expediency. Despite the radicality of some of Bataille's ideas, here he doesn't question anything of real importance: neither the believe essay, historical inevitability of Bolshevism, the political legitimacy of the so-called Soviet Union itself (the Soviets themselves were forcibly suppressed in the early 1920s), the necessity of industrialization (both in general and in the specific case of the Russian economy), nor the desirability of 2010 questions essay, Russia's survival. As Bataille himself showed in a preceding chapter, the quotations on essay information technology, Aztecs were conquered; Islam declined; Tibet was undermined. The United States, Bataille says, is also doomed. Why shouldn't Russia meet the same (unavoidable) fate? It's also striking that Bataille's argument includes the following remark: But if one judges this development of Russian resources in a general way, one risks forgetting the conditions in 2010 questions which it was begun and the necessity that compelled it (italics added). In other words, one must concentrate on specific circumstances, not the who to, general situation.
This plainly contradicts two other remarks made by Bataille -- Situations arise in which, wrongly or rightly, acts of cruelty, harming individuals, seem negligible in view of the misfortunes they are meant to avoid, and [B]ut a single man can die, and an immense population is 2010 questions faced with no other possibility than life -- as well as the who to write a report, central premise of general economy. Are there not causes and effects that will appear only provided that the 2010 questions 2 prose essay, general data of the economy are studied? Bataille had asked, rhetorically, in his introductory remarks concerning the meaning of general economy. Will we be able to believe i this, make ourselves the masters of such dangerous activity (and one that we could not abandon in any case) without having grasped its general consequences? Should we not, given the questions essay, constant development of economic forces, pose the general problems that are linked to the movement of energy on the globe? Yes, Georges, we should, even when looking at a special case such as Stalinist Russia. And so, it's regrettable that Bataille decided to quotations technology, persevere and complete Volume I of The Accursed Share. Even though this Stalinist's analyses of eroticism and sovereignty are no doubt fascinating, we will nevertheless refrain from reading Volumes II and III of his trilogy. And we will also be quick to question those who say they are avid readers of Bataille's books to see if they know about his apologies for Stalinism. Questions Essay? But trashing The Accursed Share doesn't necessarily entail discarding everything that Bataille ever wrote.
We still value the essays contained in Visions of Excess, especially The Notion of Expenditure, which speaks of revolution and class struggle against assignments, bourgeois society as a whole in essay precisely those places that The Accursed Share speaks of the evolution of socialism in apologue the Soviet Union and a dynamic peace between the USSR and America. One notes [Bataille wrote in 1933] that in primitive societies, where the 2010 questions 2 prose, exploitation of man by quotations on essay information technology, man is still fairly weak, the products of human activity not only flow in great quantities to rich men because of the protection or social leadership services these men supposedly provide, but also because of the spectacular collective expenditures for which they must pay. In so-called civilized societies, the fundamental obligation of wealth disappeared only in a fairly recent period [. ] Everything that was generous, orgiastic, and excessive has disappeared; the themes of rivalry upon which individual activity still depends develop in obscurity, and 2010 questions essay are as shameful as belching. The representatives of the bourgeoisie have adopted an effaced manner; wealth is believe i this now displayed behind closed doors, in questions essay accordance with depressing and boring conventions [. ] Such trickery has become the dissertation apologue, principle reason for 2010, living, working, and suffering for those who lack the courage to condemn this moldy society to revolutionary destruction [. ] As the class that possesses the wealth -- having received with wealth the obligation of functional expenditure -- the modern bourgeoisie is characterized by the refusal in principle of this obligation. It has distinguished itself from the aristocracy through the fact that it has consented only to spend for itself, and within itself -- in other words, by hiding its expenditures as much as possible from the other classes [. ] In opposition, the assignments available, people's consciousness is reduced to maintaining profoundly the principle of expenditure by representing bourgeois existence as the 2010 2 prose, shame of man and as a sinister cancellation [. ] As for the masters and exploiters, whose function is to dissertation apologue, create the 2010 questions, contemptuous forms that exclude human nature -- causing this nature to exist at the limits of the earth, in other words in 2010 questions 2 prose mud -- a simple law of reciprocity requires that they be condemned to 2 prose essay, fear, to on essay information technology, the great night when their beautiful phrases will be drowned out by death screams in riots.

The first thing to ask yourself when writing a resume is, “What kind of work am I trying to get?” Your resume should be tailored to that – list the experience which is most relevant to that work first. The second question is, “What experience do I have?” The third is, “How can I organize my experience to show myself in the best possible light?” Let’s say, for argument’s sake, you’re a young singer applying for a YAP, pay-to-sing, or an audition with an opera company or agent. Should I list roles that I have in preparation, or only roles I have performed? I sometimes advise people to a report list Roles in Preparation or Roles in Repertoire which they have not yet performed. It depends on the circumstances. No one is going to look at these and think of 2 prose it as a credit, but it can show what you are working on and can be useful for reflecting a Fach change or a return to singing after time off. The rule of thumb is i this don’t list them if you don’t have to (you can always have a repertoire list on your website with ALL the essay roles you feel qualified to sing, whether you’ve had the write pleasure or not). Questions 2 Prose Essay! Also, if you’re going to list Roles in Preparation, list no more than three. We will assume your role is baritone soloist, and 2 prose essay there should not be a role listed for works like the Peter Maxwell Davies (I do not know the Brottmann but I'm assuming the same is true for that). For Education, list the institution first, then the degree + major as a single entry, then the year. This may be just my opinion, but with the morley callaghan essay exception of your BM major I would remove all references to your work in composition and 2010 essay conducting.
It is not relevant to your work as an opera singer. Well, obviously it is tuition assignments relevant to you ! but everyone else just needs to evaluate you based on your singing. Likewise, I would mention your skill at piano, violin and euphonium, but get rid of the details that make it look like your attention has been divided. Let us think that singing is your singular passion, even if it isn't. Once we get to know you better we'll find out 2010 essay, about these other mad skills of yours. I myself have an 2 prose MM in clarinet but I didn't mention that on 2010 my vocal performance resume. Do mention that you speak French well. Dissertation Apologue! No need to list the languages you have sung in - we will surmise most of that from your performance experience.
I suppose you could list something like proficient singing diction in Czech, Russian and Norwegian but I think it's not necessary unless you are auditioning for an opera in one of those languages. If Onegin is on your aria list we will see that you know how to sing in Russian. So those are my suggestions. However, everything is essay laid out very clearly here - this is already a very well-designed resume! Permalink Reply by Joel Balzun on October 18, 2014 at 12:51am. Thanks Claudia - all of those suggestions were extremely helpful! I think my resume looks less cluttered now. and now I have room to add a couple of callaghan essay important notes that I felt were important (world premieres, etc.) - I've uploaded it again, as I want to see what you think of the alignment of the 2010 questions 2 prose essay Teacher/Coach/Director/Conductor section. and of course anything else you may notice. also, another question.
You mentioned in the article to use the apologue divertissant same heading style for questions essay your repertoire list. on my resume, I have a thumbnail of my headshot. Who To Write A Report! Would I omit that on 2010 my repertoire list? Wow, Joel! This is fantastic. Everything is so clear.
Your resume now does exactly what you need it to - present a clear picture of your performance experience and training at a glance. Great job! The only further suggestions I have would be 1. don't include Cowtown w/ your degree programs - we can see that you did this festival from quotations technology, your performance history and it isn't on the same level as a BM or MM and 2010 questions essay 2. Tab the column with your degrees rather than centering them, as this would be more consistent with the overall layout. Hi Courtney – looks pretty sharp! Switch to a serif font. 2010 2 Prose! You do not need to state which events are upcoming, even if the dates do not make that immediately clear. We just need to see what you're up to, not whether or not you've already completed the write a report assignment. So I'd get rid of those asterisks. Do not capitalize elisir or amore Tweak the tabs a little to make things less crowded and balance out the space between columns. The main fix is to make it so that (Barab) does not need to be in a smaller font, but the whole layout will benefit from more even spacing. Put the name of the competition first and 2010 2 prose essay your place in 2010 questions 2 prose the next column. Consider deleting the 2010 questions 2 prose essay bottom two - they were a while ago, they aren't as prominent as many of the others, and believe i this this section need not have so much space devoted to it. For training and education, find a way to make your BM stand out. Questions 2 Prose Essay! Even though it is earlier than the rest, I'd list it first and on essay information then leave a space between it and the other training programs.
Name your major (was it voice performance?) Only include those special skills that are applicable to opera performance. For dance, list those forms that are useful and perhaps years of training. Judo could apply for stage combat, I suppose, but yoga and zumba not so much - I'd leave them off. List your instruments. We don't need to know you've recently taken up running, so delete that part.
Hope you'll find these suggestions useful - post again when you have decided on any changes! Permalink Reply by Joyce DiDonato on October 18, 2014 at 4:31pm. Claudia! Now that we are reviewing applications for your master classes, I can enthusiastically confirm that the content and layout of 2 prose a singer's resume is indeed of great importance. The video submissions are crucial, but they can only tell us so much about the breadth of a singer's experience, repertoire interests, and training. The fiercer the competition, the tuition more important these details become. And yes: never lie or exaggerate on questions essay your resume. Apologue Divertissant! Our world is so small that you will be found out. I was once on 2010 2 prose essay an evaluation panel and received the resume of a singer who claimed to morley essay have been in the cast of the workshop/premiere of questions a contemporary opera that a student of dissertation apologue divertissant mine had participated in, so I knew she hadn't been involved! I am at 2010 questions essay, a much earlier stage in my career than some of the 2010 2 prose essay other singers. I'm currently applying for graduate school and questions definitely don't have as much professional experience, but I would love your opinion! There are a few areas in which I would like specific feedback, the first being how much information I need to provide about concert engagements. If I was hired to sing just a few selections on a bigger program, how should I denote that? I don't want it to appear as thought I'm obfuscating or making engagements look bigger than they are, but I'm afraid of adding too many qualifiers for fear of clutter. Secondly, I have an eyebrow ring, and I have heard various opinions about whether or not I should wear it for head shots and 2010 questions auditions. Some say, no problem, they can imagine you without it, as much as they can imagine you with a wig on and others say that it's unprofessional. Believe Essay I This! What do you think? As regards your eyebrow ring: The general rule for available audition presentation and attire is to make yourself look as flexible as possible so that it is easy for panelists to envision you as a variety of characters in productions they are casting (and you may not even know what those are). So while you want to look stylish and questions 2 prose essay attractive, to 2010 questions 2 prose essay a certain extent you also need to be a neutral screen that they can project things onto. 2010 Questions! AP Test Review - OnCourse
A level Biology Coursework - Effect of substrate concentration on rate of activity of the enzyme catalase. Aim: To investigate the effect of substrate concentration on the rate of activity of the enzyme catalase. Catalase is an enzyme which is found in 2 prose essay most living organisms. It catalyses the decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide into water and oxygen. Catalase dramatically reduces the who to write a report activation energy needed for the reaction. 2010 Questions Essay. Without catalase the decomposition would take much longer, and would not be fast enough to tuition assignments available sustain human life. Hydrogen peroxide is also a dangerous, very potent by-product of 2010 essay, metabolism, so it is essential that it is broken down quickly, otherwise it would cause damage to cells. I have done some preliminary work and as a result, have identified problems that may occur in my main investigation, such as timing, measuring and keeping variables that I am not investigating constant, (such as temperature etc). In the main procedure I will control the temperature in a water bath in order to create a constant external temperature to dissipate the heat energy. This will minimise the who to write a report effect of temperature on the results of the experiment. I have decided to do this because in my preliminary procedures, I used a thermometer to measure the temperature of the hydrogen peroxide (when left on the side) at different intervals, and on 2010 questions essay, different days, and found that the temperature of the hydrogen peroxide fluctuated slightly.
By doing this, it will ensure that the test is as fair as I can make it. Although the reaction is exothermic and will give out heat during the technology reaction anyway, since the heat has been dissipated by questions 2 prose essay being kept in the water bath, the amount of heat given off in quotations on essay the experiment will be relative to the concentration of hydrogen peroxide, but obviously some reactions will take longer than others, so more heat will be produced. However the temperature initially will be kept the same in each case. This is also very relevant because we may not get the opportunity to do the whole experiment on one day, or in the same class room. This means the room temperature in each class room or on different days will not be the 2010 questions 2 prose same for each procedure, because of quotations information, obvious factors such as type of day (very cold or mild etc) and the level of heating within the class rooms. Temperature directly affects the shape of the active site. At a temperature below the optimum, the molecules have less kinetic energy so the rate of 2 prose essay, collisions between enzyme and substrate molecules are low and therefore less enzyme-substrate complexes are formed. As the temperature increases the callaghan molecules have more kinetic energy and so collide more often, resulting in 2 prose essay an increased rate of reaction. Because of this, it is very important to control the temperature, in order to ensure a constant temperature is maintained. Above the optimum temperature, the two fishermen morley thermal energy breaks the hydrogen bonds holding the secondary and tertiary structure together, so the active site changes shape and 2 prose essay, eventually the reaction can no longer be catalysed.
I will keep the water bath at 25 o C because the optimum temperature for the enzyme catalase at which it works most effectively is 45 o C. This will ensure that, since the temperature is below the optimum the reaction will be slower and therefore enable me to collect oxygen at a measurable rate. I may, however need to change this as I have not done a preliminary experiment using a water bath. In my preliminary work I also found that when doing the experiment with 1g of yeast, and 5cm 3 of 20 volume of hydrogen peroxide, the rate of reaction was too fast to collect oxygen at a measurable rate, and therefore made it impossible to gain meaningful results. I consequently reduced the mass of yeast to 0.2g rather than the 1.0g I used initially, and still used the same volume (5cm 3 )of hydrogen peroxide. This meant that because the enzyme concentration (catalase in two fishermen morley callaghan yeast) was reduced there were less collisions between enzyme and substrate molecules so the rate of enzyme-substrate formations were reduced.
This meant that less gas evolved with time, so I could effectively time, and measure the volume of oxygen produced. Another factor which I had to 2010 questions 2 prose consider was the surface area of the yeast granules, because each yeast granule has a different surface area the amount of enzyme will differ in each granule, but more importantly the greater the surface area of the yeast the more reactions take place because of the fact that there will be more collisions between the enzyme and substrate molecules. In my first preliminary experiment I just weighed 1.0g of yeast as it was supplied in on essay information its granule form. However in 2010 2 prose my next preliminary experiment, I decided this would be unfair in the main procedure and because of this I decided to grind the yeast into a powder so that the surface area would be more similar in each yeast granule. Also, in my main procedure I will grind a larger mass of yeast (more than I need), and then weigh it, rather than weighing the yeast and then grinding. Believe I This. This is important because if I weigh the 2010 2 prose essay yeast and then grind with the pestle, some of the yeast will be lost because it might get stuck to the pestle, hence decreasing the technology mass of yeast slightly. I will also use the same batch of yeast because this will ensure that the yeast granules have the same surface area.
I also used 2 different methods in order to 2010 determine which would be the most effective in gaining the tuition best possible results, with minimal error. In my first experiment, I used the questions 2 prose displacement of water method, whereby a measuring cylinder (containing water) is placed upside down in a plastic tub, with a tube attached to the test tube (airtight). A syringe with hydrogen peroxide is quotations also present (as shown in the diagram). I believe that as the questions essay concentration of the hydrogen peroxide (substrate) decreases, the rate of dissertation divertissant, reaction will decrease consequently. This is because there will be fewer collisions between the substrate and enzyme molecules (catalase in yeast) – because there are fewer molecules of hydrogen peroxide, so there will be a decrease in enzyme-substrate complexes formed. Essay. The reaction will then stop because all of the active sites become saturated with substrate because the enzyme is the limiting factor. This will result in a decreased volume of oxygen being produced as one of the by-products of this reaction.
In addition, based on my knowledge of the collision theory I believe that if the concentration of hydrogen peroxide is doubled (or halved) then the rate of reaction is also doubled (or halved). This is because if the concentration is doubled the number of molecules of the substrate is also doubled. This means there will be twice as many successful collisions. Apologue. Therefore it is true to 2010 2 prose essay say that in theory: rate µ concentration. I will investigate if this is true for this reaction.
The hydrogen peroxide is injected into the test tube and the volume of oxygen gas is recorded (by the amount of who to a report, water displaced). Essay. This would determine the rate of reaction. However I decided against this method for several reasons. Firstly, because I used such a large measuring cylinder, the volume of gas produced was hard to two fishermen morley callaghan measure as not much water had been displaced. Although I could have used a smaller measuring cylinder, I decided that the 2010 questions 2 prose best possible way I could do the experiment was by dissertation measuring the volume of gas directly using a gas syringe, rather than by 2010 the displacement of water. Also, because the hydrogen peroxide had to be inserted into the syringe before the reaction could begin, the 2010 questions amount of time it would be out of the water bath (which I intend to questions use in my main experiment) was longer than necessary.
I decided that I could reduce this time by using a different method. In my second preliminary experiment, I used a gas syringe instead, which measured the volume of write, oxygen produced directly, rather than by the displacement of water. The hydrogen peroxide is inserted into a 5cm 3 small beaker and then tipped over to “spill” the contents and start the reaction. I felt that this would give me more reliable result in my main investigation because the length of time that the hydrogen peroxide is out of the water bath is reduced. Furthermore, the volume of gas is measured directly.
I noticed that when doing the 2010 essay first method that “bubbles of gas” were affected by people bumping the table, and that sometimes they got trapped in essay the tube, so even though the product of the reaction (oxygen) had been formed it was not measured until afterwards, (at a later stage in the reaction). Also, the bubble volume is questions affected by the diameter of the tuition available tube and the overall pressure of the 2010 questions water (depth of the tuition assignments available water) so I believe that by essay using the gas syringe, I will be able to eliminate this inaccuracy as water will not be involved. The gas syringe, however, also has a small volume of air displaced within it when it is attached to essay the conical flask, so I will have to consider this in the main procedure. I will subtract this volume of air from each of my results so that I can gain a precise measure of the volume of gas produced. The preliminary experiment also gave me an idea as to 2010 2 prose how often I should measure the volume of gas formed (i.e. every 5, 10, 15 seconds etc). In my first preliminary experiment the reaction went to technology fast to collect oxygen at questions 2 prose essay a measurable rate, but in the second preliminary experiment I measured the essay volume of gas every 10 seconds, but found that the 2010 questions 2 prose reaction was over who to a report before I had enough measurements and 2010 essay, that the results I gained would not be sufficient to who to obtain enough results and make a valid conclusion. I therefore did a further experiment based on mainly on timing only, and found that if I measured the volume of gas every 5 seconds I obtained enough measurements. However, I do have to take into account that I will be using different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide in my main experiment, so 5 seconds may not be sufficient to measure the volume of oxygen produced in the slower reactions and I may need to change this. The concentrations of hydrogen peroxide I will use will be 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60% and 50%. I will use these concentrations because I believe that if I were to go any lower than 50% that the questions essay rate of reaction will be relatively slow, and will not produce enough results because the substrate concentration (hydrogen peroxide) will be too low in concentration.
I also want to decrease in 10% because I believe it will provide me with closer results rather than decreasing by 20% which will mean I would be testing a concentration of 0% of hydrogen peroxide. Finally, I also want to determine whether or not half the 100% concentration of hydrogen peroxide (50%) would produce half the volume of gas. Bored of revsion? need to read something GOOD? Want to say thanks for dissertation apologue divertissant this article? Help me out by checking out this book I helped co-edit. Thanks in advance! The independent variable will be the factor that I am going to manipulate. This will be the concentration of the hydrogen peroxide. I intend to use a pipette in order to make up the 2010 concentrations of 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, and quotations, 50%. I will do this by making each mixture up to 100cm 3 , so for example, the 90% concentrated solution will consist of 90cm 3 of hydrogen peroxide, and 10cm 3 water.
I will put the 6 different concentrated solutions in a conical flask which will be placed into a water bath. Because a pipette is a very accurate way of measuring volumes, I believe that this will be the 2010 essay best method to make up the concentrations. This will eliminate a very large apparatus error that would occur if I used a beaker or conical flask. The dependant variable – the variable I intend to measure is the volume of gas produced in write each reaction. This will vary as a direct result to questions 2 prose the different concentration of hydrogen peroxide. Controlled variable – the controlled variable consist of essay, all the other factors which must be kept constant.
This will be the mass of 2010 essay, yeast for callaghan each experiment (0.2g). I will make sure that I measure 0.2g of yeast as accurately as I can using the balance. The balance has a mechanism whereby it can be made level (so perfectly balanced) regardless of the angle of the desk or counter it is placed on. I have explained this is questions my method below. I will also consider the apparatus error of the balance (and indeed all the equipment I use) so I can work out the overall error derived from the apparatus and two fishermen essay, identify this in my conclusion. Essay. I am also controlling the temperature, so this has to be considered, because I am controlling 2 variables. This will affect my results, but I believe it will make them more accurate since the temperature will be constant, and so eliminate any fluctuations in temperature (as I have explained earlier). It will also rule out the fact that if I have to do my procedures in different rooms/days, the 2010 questions 2 prose essay temperature in the room might be different.
Conical flask 20 vols hydrogen peroxide Water Yeast Gas syringe Stop clock Clamp stand 50cm 3 pipette 20cm 3 pipette 25cm 3 pipette Water bath Syringe Stopper Pestle and mortar Thermometer Tweezers 5cm 3 Beaker. Firstly I am going to measure out the 2010 2 prose essay concentrations of write, hydrogen peroxide that I have decided on. This will be 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60% and 2010 2 prose essay, 50%. I will do this by adding different volumes of water to make up 100cm 3 .For example, the 80% concentrated solution will consist of 80cm 3 of hydrogen peroxide and 20cm 3 of water, (as shown in the table below). Instead of using a conical flask or a measuring cylinder, I will use a pipette because they are very accurate for measuring volumes. I will then place the 6 conical flasks in a water bath, at 25 o C, to assignments create a constant external temperature to dissipate the heat energy. I will do this first to ensure that the 2 prose mixtures have enough time to reach a constant temperature, rather than only putting them in for a short time because this will mean there may be fluctuations in temperature of the different molecules which I was initially trying to believe essay eliminate. Next, I will grind the 2010 yeast into quotations on essay, a powder using a pestle and essay, mortar. Tuition. I will grind up more than I need, so that I can use the same (ground) yeast for all of my experiments. This will also be fairer than grinding the yeast on different days or for different procedures, because the time spent grinding may be different.
Hopefully this will mean that each yeast granule will have the same (or a very similar) surface area. I will then set up my apparatus. Finally, on setting up the essay apparatus, I will place the balance on the table, making sure the bubble in the spirit level is in the middle level, thereby eliminating any deviation from the balance position. This means that even though the table may not be level, the pan (or weighing basin) is perfectly level. I will set up my apparatus this way every time I need to, e.g. when I need another lesson to complete my investigation.
Once the apparatus is set up, I will place a conical flask on the balance, and set the balance to 0, so that I can weigh the yeast only, which I will place in tuition the conical flask using a spatula until the right weight (0.2g) is in questions the conical flask. I will weigh the yeast directly into the conical flask, not a Petri dish, because then I do not have to worry about transferring the who to yeast from the Petri dish to the conical flask. Next I will place the conical flask under the 2010 questions essay gas syringe and place an airtight stopper in the top, with a single tube attached to the gas syringe as shown in the diagram. I will then take the conical flask with the 100% hydrogen peroxide out tuition assignments, of the 2010 questions 2 prose water bath and measure exactly 5cm 3 of the mixture using a syringe, and tuition, place it into the 5cm 3 small beaker. Being very careful as not to spill the mixture, I will take the stopper off the questions conical flask and lower the beaker into the conical flask using tweezers. I will then put the stopper back on essay i this, the conical flask so the procedure is ready to commence. Using a stop clock I will time from the moment the small beaker is tipped over to when the reaction stops, measuring the questions essay volume of gas evolved every 15 seconds. The reaction is over dissertation apologue divertissant when I record 3 volumes of gas that are concordant or very similar. This indicates that no more gas is being produced because the enzyme is the limiting factor as all the 2010 questions essay active sites are occupied. Who To Write A Report. I will repeat this method using the different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide making sure to wash the equipment thoroughly after each reaction.
I will carry out each reaction 3 times for each to gain an average. I hope to record concordant results for each repeat, so if an questions anomaly occurs I can discount it and 2010 2 prose essay, repeat the procedure again. I will record the data in a table and allow me to work out the rate of reaction. I will then represent the results in a graph. Essay. This will enable me to work out the gradient and make a conclusion based on the evidence I have obtained. Who To. Hydrogen peroxide, if inhaled or has contact with the skin or eyes, can be very dangerous and toxic. Questions 2 Prose. I will therefore be wearing safety goggles whenever I am handling the hydrogen peroxide and during the reaction, and will also wear gloves.
I will also make sure that my hair is tied back at all times and a report, that I am not wearing any jewellery or articles of 2010, clothing that may come into contact with the hydrogen peroxide. 2010 Essay. I will also clean up any spillages immediately. Essay. I believe that the graph will firstly start of apologue, steep in all the reactions, but steepest in the 100% concentration of hydrogen peroxide and 2010 2 prose, gradually decreasing as the concentration of hydrogen peroxide decrease. This is because there will be more collisions between the enzyme and substrate molecules so more enzyme-substrate complexes. The curve will then level off and dissertation apologue, this represents the point where most of the enzymes active sites are saturated. The curve will eventually stay constant and this is because the 2010 questions enzyme molecules are fully saturated. This is called the maximum velocity of reaction or Vmax. The substrate concentration at this point, even if increased, will not affect the believe rate of reaction because it is the questions enzyme which is in low concentration. I believe that the graph for one of the concentrations, for example 100% hydrogen peroxide, will look similar to the one below. I believe that each curve for each concentration will look like the tuition one above, but for each decreased concentration – 90%, 80%, 70%, 60% and 2010 questions, 50%, the value of the Vmax will decrease too, as will the initial rate of reaction, This is because of the fact that there will be less substrate molecules in each successive concentration, so fewer collisions between particles that can react with each other.
This means that the a report number of collisions that reach the activation energy also decreases. This can be explained by the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution curve: THEN Draw the graph using your results or the one's in the above table. Based on the information above, I therefore believe that the graph with all the concentrations plotted will look similar to the one below. I will record my results in a table like the one below, and then record further, average results, in a similar table. I will draw a graph based on the average results, and draw a curve of best fit for 2010 each concentration which will help me analyse my results. I will then work out the gradient of each curve and plot a further graph of percentage of H 2 O 2 against rate of reaction on write a report, the y-axis. I would expect this graph to be linear as this would show that as the concentration increases, time taken for a set volume of gas would decrease - in other words, the rate is 2010 essay proportional to the concentration. I expect this graph to look similar to the one I have drawn previously.
I will work out the dissertation divertissant rate of reaction from the results gained in the first 5 seconds as this will be the point where the greatest volume of gas is evolved. I had to change the volume of hydrogen peroxide used from 5cm 3 to 4cm 3 because in the first reaction with 100% hydrogen peroxide went too fast to collect oxygen at a measurable rate. When I did repeat the questions procedure with 4cm 3 of hydrogen peroxide, I could effectively measure the volume of gas. Quotations Information Technology. I also had to change the gas syringe because at first the reaction did not occur, and this was because a large volume of gas was leaking from a tear in the tube. I also had to repeat the whole of the 70% concentration of questions essay, hydrogen peroxide because the results were all anomalous when compared to the rest of the data. I will talk about why this might have been in my evaluation. * Another factor which I found out later when I drew my graphs was that there were limitations to the range of results I collected, so I decided to collect some more results. I have explained this later on. Below is a table of the results I collected, including all the results which I had to assignments repeat. The raw results can be seen in the appendix. Because my results where mostly concordant, and at the very least there was only a 2cm 3 difference between any 2 repeats out of 3, I decided that I did not need to repeat any of the procedures, apart from the whole of concentration 7 which I will discuss later.
This then enabled me to work out an average by adding up 3 three repeat values and dividing by 3. Questions. For example the 100% concentration average would be (48+49+48) ? 3). Below is quotations on essay a table showing the average results. From these results, I can see instantly that less gas was evolved in the first 5 seconds as the concentration decreased and that the overall volume of gas also became successively lower in each decreased concentration. Essay. This is because there were more molecules of hydrogen peroxide in the higher concentrations, so more collisions took place and so there was a greater probability of successful collisions. This resulted in more enzyme-substrate complexes formed in the higher concentrations, and less in the each decreased concentration. A Report. This supports the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution curve I drew earlier. I have drawn a graph based on these average results, with a curve of best fit for each concentration which will allow me to questions identify any anomalies. From the graph I can see that as the concentration of hydrogen peroxide decreased, the volume of dissertation divertissant, oxygen produced decreased as a direct result.
This is because as the concentration decreased, the number of molecules of 2 prose, hydrogen peroxide also decreased. This decreased the number of particles that can react with each other, and so the number of collisions that reached the activation energy also decreased. This means that there are also less successful collisions, and so less enzyme-substrate complexes formed. Questions. The final volume of questions 2 prose essay, oxygen produced also decreased as the dissertation concentration decreased, and 2010 essay, this is because less collisions overall took place, and so a reduced number of believe, collisions reached the 2 prose activation energy. This was because there were fewer molecules initially, and this resulted in a lower probability that the molecules would collide. This means that there were less successful collisions overall. For example, the callaghan 100% concentration of hydrogen peroxide evolved a final volume of oxygen of 88.3cm 3 , 90% concentration evolved 73.3cm 3 of oxygen, 80% - 63.7cm 3 , 70% - 49.3cm 3 , 60% - 44.7cm 3 and the 50% concentration evolved 37cm 3 of oxygen. The initial rate of reaction is 2010 2 prose essay fastest for the 100% concentration of hydrogen peroxide and gradually decreases as the concentration decreases. This can be explained by quotations the collision theory, which states that the questions 2 prose essay time taken for a reaction to take place, and so a set volume of gas to be evolved, becomes shorter for technology higher concentrations substrate. This is because at higher concentrations there are more substrate molecules than in lower concentrations.
Subsequently, if there are more molecules, then there will be more collisions taking place, and therefore more reactions between enzyme and substrate molecules take place in 1 second, and 2 prose, so oxygen is evolved more rapidly. So at the 100% concentration of hydrogen peroxide, the oxygen was given of more rapidly because there were more substrate and enzyme molecules reacting in dissertation divertissant a second. From the curves of best fit, I can also see that there were no anomalous results, only 2010 questions 2 prose some results which were slightly above or below the believe essay curve, though they were not excessively distorted. This shows that my results were relatively accurate for each concentration alone. To find out if the concentrations together were accurate, I worked out the rate of reaction.
This enabled me to find out if each concentration, based on 2010, the number of divertissant, molecules of substrate in 2010 questions 2 prose each decrease of 10%, was similar or even showed a pattern which I failed to identify with my previous results. I did this by working out the gradient of who to write a report, each curve and plotting these values against the concentrations on 2010 2 prose, the x- axis. The method which I used to do this can be seen on the next page. By plotting these values on a graph I could also see if there was a relationship between the different concentrations. On the next page is a graph showing the rate of reaction, with a line of best fit. (again - on questions 2 prose essay, your graph showing rate of 2010 questions essay, reaction, draw a line of best fit) Overall, I believe my experiment went well and I believe that I gained sufficient results because I repeated each concentration 3 times, and investigated 8 concentrations in total. I believe that my results were also relatively reliable because as you can see from the graph I plotted with the curve of best fit for each concentration, as the concentration decreases the volume of two fishermen morley essay, oxygen produced also decreases. For example, the 100% concentration of hydrogen peroxide evolved a final average volume of questions 2 prose, gas of 77cm 3 of oxygen while the 90% concentration evolved a final average volume of believe essay i this, 73.3cm 3 . Also most of the points were on or close to 2010 questions the curve of write a report, best fit for each concentration. However there are some factors that I must take into consideration.
Firstly, there were limitations of the essay apparatus that I used. Each piece of apparatus has an apparatus error in which there is an upper and write, lower limit. For example the balance had an apparatus error of ±0.01 which means that since I used 0.2g of yeast, this value could either be 0.21g or 0.19g. This obviously affects the amount of catalase present, and this means that there could be more or less collisions and 2010 questions 2 prose essay, so successful collisions between enzyme and substrate molecules depending on dissertation divertissant, the greater or lower mass of yeast. 2 Prose Essay. For example, if there were more molecules of yeast the a report rate of reaction would increase because there would be more collisions between enzyme and substrate molecules which would result in a greater probability of 2010 essay, successful collisions, and therefore more enzyme-substrate complexes being produced. This means that in my results, the volume of apologue, gas produced in the first 5 seconds may have been higher than it should have been if I had used exactly 0.2g of 2010, yeast. This could have been a reason for the very fast rate of reaction of the 100% hydrogen peroxide, which showed up as an anomalous result on the first rate of essay i this, reaction graph. 2010 2 Prose. This would apply for dissertation apologue divertissant the substrate concentration too, in 2010 questions 2 prose essay that the quotations on essay pipettes also had an apparatus error. This would also mean the amount of substrate molecules could have been different for each repeat, even though I used the same concentration. For example in the 100% concentration I used two 50cm 3 pipettes which had an apparatus error of questions essay, ±0.01. So in 100cm 3 the actual volume could have been either 99.98cm 3 of hydrogen peroxide or 100.02cm 3 of hydrogen peroxide so there would have either been more or fewer molecules of information technology, hydrogen peroxide.
If there were fewer molecules of hydrogen peroxide, there would have been fewer collisions between molecules of questions, enzyme and substrate, resulting in fewer enzyme-substrate complexes being made. Believe. However, I do not believe they were significantly different because each of my repeats were mostly concordant, so a similar amount of oxygen was produced which must mean that there was a similar number of substrate molecules in each. For example, from my results, in the 100% concentrated solution on the first repeat, 48cm 3 of oxygen was produced. In the second repeat, 49cm 3 was and in the third repeat 48cm 3 of oxygen was produced. Essay. I tried to select the quotations on essay best method with which I considered would be most accurate. I decided on the gas syringe method because, as I explained in my plan, it measured the volume of gas directly and would also minimise the volume of oxygen which could potentially dissolve in water. 2010. However, some oxygen was displaced in the gas syringe and I had to solve this by who to write subtracting this small volume from the volumes produced in each of the reactions. 2010 Essay. Also, I noticed if the barrel was wet, the syringe often got stuck for information a short time before it recorded the volumes of gas.
To prevent this I had to questions 2 prose dry out the barrel and syringe before commencing the procedure. It was very hard to insert the i this small 5cm 3 beaker into the conical flask, and when it came to tipping it over, some of the substrate was still trapped inside the beaker. I solved this by swirling the 2010 questions 2 prose essay conical flask constantly throughout the reactions and i this, this seemed to solve the problem. Although, this means that the amount of swirling had to be the same in order to ensure a fair test. I tried to keep this constant by making sure I swirled the conical flask evenly. 2010 Questions 2 Prose Essay. The accuracy of the believe essay results showed that this factor did not distort the results too much, and 2010 questions 2 prose, so a similar amount of 2010 questions essay, substrate molecules were present in each reaction. For example, the repeated concentration of 80% had values of 32cm 3 ,33cm 3 and 32cm 3 which means that a similar number of substrate was present in each reaction.
Another factor which was hard to 2 prose essay measure was the volume of gas produced because some of the higher concentration reactions were very fast, so it was hard to read off the correct values every time. I tried to make this as accurate as possible by making sure my eyes were level with the dissertation apologue gas syringe. Again, judging by the accuracy of my repeat results, I believe that this factor was not an issue. Although I did not check for gas leaks beforehand, there was good agreement between my replicates. In the 60% concentration the 2 prose repeats at two fishermen callaghan essay 5 seconds were 20, 21 and 20cm 3 , which is concordant. If my replicates had not been so close I would have had to 2010 2 prose change the tube. I ground up the dissertation apologue divertissant yeast to try to make the surface area as similar as possible, because surface area is a major factor in my experiment.
A larger surface area means there is more molecules being exposed to collisions with other molecules, with sufficient energy to cause a reaction. This means that having the same surface area of questions 2 prose, yeast in each reaction is very important in ensuring a fair test because the assignments number of molecules exposed to 2 prose collisions must be the same. Temperature is a major factor which affects rate of reaction. Quotations On Essay. This is because at higher temperatures, molecules of both enzyme and substrate have more kinetic energy and so collide more often. This results in 2010 questions 2 prose essay a bigger proportion of molecules having a higher energy greater than that of the activation energy. Dissertation Apologue. More collisions are therefore successful so more substrate is converted into product. The reaction is 2010 questions 2 prose exothermic, and so heat is obviously produced in the reaction. The higher the concentration the more heat will be produced because the molecules of both substrate and enzyme have more energy, and so collide more often producing more heat energy. Quotations. This heat energy is transferred to the environment.
Although I tried to control the temperature in a water bath, and to good effect because a constant external temperature was produced and so the heat energy was dissipated, I could not control the amount of heat given off in each reaction. This would have affected my results for several reasons. Firstly, more oxygen dissolves in water at a lower temperature than at high temperatures and this means that for questions the reactions involving low concentrations more oxygen would have dissolved than in tuition available the higher concentrations because of the decreased amount of heat energy given off. Essay. Because the who to write a report volume of 2010 questions, oxygen dissolved in the reaction is not constant for all the essay i this reactions, because less oxygen is dissolved in water at higher temperatures, this would have affected my results. This may have been why the difference in the final volume of oxygen produced was not equal, but instead decreased in steps of 2010 questions 2 prose, 3.7cm 3 , 9.6cm 3 , 14.4cm 3 , 4.6cm 3 and a report, 7.7cm 3 . The different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide that I made up could not have been exactly accurate because this would have meant that the volume of gas evolved would have increased in equal steps which it did not. For example, the final average volume of gas for 100% hydrogen peroxide was 77cm 3 , and for 90% was 73.3cm 3 , 80% - 63.7cm 3 , 70% - 49.3cm 3 , 60% - 44.7cm 3 and 50% it was 37cm 3 . As I have mentioned earlier, this decreases in steps of 3.7cm 3 , 9.6cm 3 , 14.4cm 3 , 4.6cm 3 and 7.7cm 3 , which is far from equal. This may have been because I only used a pipette when measuring the hydrogen peroxide, and only poured the water into the volumetric flask to make up the 100cm 3 . 2010 2 Prose Essay. I believed this was accurate, but upon reflection using a pipette would have been much more accurate as pipettes have a much lower apparatus error than the 2010 questions 2 prose essay volumetric flask.
This may have also been a reason why I had to repeat the 2010 2 prose whole of the 70cm 3 concentration, which initially had a final volume of gas, 72cm 3 , which was greater than the final volume of oxygen produced in the 80% concentration, 64cm 3 . Also I had to make sure I washed out the who to a report conical flask and beaker thoroughly with distilled water and addition I made sure they were also dried sufficiently. If I hadn’t I could have risked diluting the solutions more and questions, this would have affected the dissertation apologue number of questions 2 prose, molecules of hydrogen peroxide present which in turn would have affected the number of collisions between enzyme and substrate molecules. For example, if there was still only 1cm 3 of water still remaining in quotations on essay the conical flask and beaker combined, then in say the 80% concentration of questions 2 prose essay, hydrogen peroxide, the concentration would have been closer to 79%. 2010 Questions 2 Prose Essay. This can be shown by the simple calculation of 80 ? 101 x 100 = 79.2%. Overall I believe that my data does reflect my hypothesis that “ as the questions 2 prose essay concentration of believe essay i this, hydrogen peroxide decreases that rate of 2010 2 prose, reaction will decrease consequently because there will be few collision between enzyme and substrate molecules due to a decreased number of molecules ”. This is shown by my rate of reaction graph which shows that for the 100% concentration of hydrogen peroxide, the rate of reaction was 8cm 3 second -1 , and the 90% concentration was only questions 2 prose essay 7.4cm 3 second -1 . My results also showed that the reaction will gradually slow and 2010 questions 2 prose essay, eventually stop because the dissertation enzyme will become the limiting factor. This is shown when oxygen stops being produces and the same results is recorded 5 times. So for example, I knew that the 2010 100% concentration of hydrogen peroxide reaction was over because I recorded 88cm 3 at least 5 times. However, I also believed that if I halved the concentration then the rate of reaction (volume of oxygen produced) would also be halved, and information, so the rate would be proportional to the concentration. This would show that the reaction is a first order reaction. Though in theory this should be the trend, my results did not show this pattern.
So, although my results did show a positive correlation, it doesn’t necessarily mean I have an accurate correlation, because my results do not follow specific trends. For example the final value at 50% was 37cm 3 whilst the volume of oxygen produced at 100cm 3 was 77cm 3 which is not double 37. Again the questions essay final volume of oxygen produced at 2010 30% was 27.3cm 3 , whilst the 2 prose essay final value produced in tuition available the 60% concentration was 44.7cm 3 which also not double. As can be seen from the rate of reaction graph, the concentrations of 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% and 90% are relatively even, and would suggest that the line of best fit should be drawn where I have drawn the line of best fit (1). However this does not account for the fact that a concentration of 0% hydrogen peroxide produces 0cm 3 of oxygen.
If the line of best fit (1) is correct it would make this value an anomaly, which clearly it is not since it is the most accurate value on the graph. The line of best fit (2) therefore makes much more sense, because it is crosses through (0,0), and 2 prose essay, also shows that the concentrations of 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% and 90% are still quite even. However, this presents a problem because this either suggests that the tuition concentration of 100% is not accurate and is an anomaly, or that the line of best fit should in fact be a curve of best fit. This presents me with a problem in the fact that I now have limitations because I did not test any of the 2010 concentrations below 50%, which would clearly define whether the on essay graph should have a line or a curve of best fit. 2010 2 Prose Essay. Consequently I have decided to do further experiments with concentrations of 10% and 30% hydrogen peroxide. I will use exactly the same method as I did previously, and since I still have some yeast left, I can still use the same batch of quotations on essay, yeast.
I will then work out the gradient of the 2 concentrations and plot them on a rate of reaction graph along with the other concentrations. I will also repeat the 100% concentration of hydrogen peroxide, because I believe this was an anomalous result. 2010. Because it had a rate of reaction that was so much higher than the other values. Hopefully, with the new and repeated results I will be able to analyse my results further and therefore evaluate them with more evidence than I had previously. I will work out the gradient of these new results and 2 prose essay, plot them on a new rate of reaction graph.
This should tell me whether the reaction is indeed is 2 prose essay a first order reaction, or if a curve of best fit is required. Now I have carried out the repeats and a report, plotted the 2010 points on the rate of reaction graph I can see that the graph is in fact clearly linear. This means that the reaction a first order reaction, so the rate is proportional to the concentration. I believe that the data also shows strong positive correlation, and there are few outliers which show that my results are accurate. I have drawn a line of believe essay i this, best fit to clearly illustrate this trend. The line of best fit also suggests values of concentrations which I have not investigated. I can find out what these values might be by drawing a line up and across from the line of best fit. 2010 2 Prose Essay. So, for example the 40% concentration should have a curve gradient near to the value of 3 (shown by a report red line on the graph) Overall, the there is a pattern showing a constant trend in that as the concentration decreases the rate of reaction decreases too, and 2010 questions 2 prose, that the who to overall volume of gas evolved also decreases. This is because at essay higher concentration there is more molecules of substrate , so more collision take place, resulting in quotations more enzyme-substrate complexes being formed.
This is shown in the table with all the results I have gained. 2010 Questions. Apparatus error was one of the main factors in my experiment which I tried to keep at a minimal. I did this by only using pipettes which have a very small apparatus error when compared to beakers. I also avoided using apparatus more than I had to when measuring amounts. The balance proved to be the biggest apparatus error and this would have been much bigger if I had used only 0.1g rather than 0.2g of questions essay, yeast. Below is 2010 2 prose essay a summary of all the percentage errors.
50cm 3 pipette ± 0.01. 20cm 3 pipette ± 0.03. 10cm 3 pipette ± 0.02. Balance 0.01 ? 0.2 x 100 = 5% Making up concentrations. Questions 2 Prose. 100% using 2 x 50cm 3 pipettes: 0.01 ? 50 x 100 = 0.02% x 2. 90% using 1 x 50cm 3 pipette, 0.01 ? 50 x 100 = 0.02% 2 x 20cm 3 pipette: 0.03 ? 20 x 100 = 0.15% x 2 = 0.3% 1 x 20cm 3 pipette, 1 x 10cm 3 pipette 0.01 ? 50 x 100 = 0.02% 0.03 ? 20 x 100 = 0.15% 0.02 ? 10 x 100 = 0.10%
70% using 1 x 50cm 3 pipette, 0.01 ? 50 x 100 = 0.02% 1 x 20cm 3 pipette 0.03 ? 20 x 100 = 0.15% 60% using 1 x 50cm 3 pipette, 0.01 ? 50 x 100 = 0.02% 1 x 10cm 3 pipette 0.02 ? 10 x 100 = 0.02 % 50% using 1 x 50cm 3 pipette 0.01 ? 50 x 100 = 0.02% Total apparatus error for apparatus used for concentrations = 0.66% Total error for apparatus – 5.66% Considering the whole experiment, 5.66% is 2010 essay a relatively small apparatus error, and taking into dissertation, account that the fact that the balance contributed to 5% of this error, the remaining error is minimal. Remembering that a apparatus error on the balance is ±0.01, this would mean that the yeast could weigh 2.01g or 1.19g and this either increases or decreases the number of molecules present. Essay: Business ethics – ethical business behaviour. This essay aims to analyze the questions 2 prose essay, essential of ethical business behaviour. This essay will focus on two fishermen morley essay the business ethics on employees. After the introduction part, the definition of business ethic and corporate social responsibility will be given in Chapter 2. In the next Chapter 3, it would describe three basic concept and moral value of ethics which focusing on employees. Furthermore, it will explain the importance of business ethic in a company in essay, Chapter 4. In the last Chapter 5, it will use a case study of Foxconn suicide to analyze how unethical business will affect the company. Producing of new trendy products or providing excellent services is not the only reason to 2010 questions, attract customers now. Business ethics is taking a significant position on it. Business people are the 2010 2 prose essay, experts to maximize the profit of a company. They suppose to be good at different business fields, which included financing, marketing, and tuition assignments available business administration.
However, the general public are raising awareness of the corporate social responsibility these years, such as environmental issue, labour exploitation and honesty on business dealing. 2010 Essay! Therefore, for profit maximization, business person must have a good vision on believe essay operating business ethically. 2 Prose! And it would be other criteria for customers or business partner to choose your company instead of others. This essay will divide to three main parts: the first part will provide basic idea of business ethic and available corporate social responsibility. Essay! The second part will illustrate the concept on write business ethics which concerning on employees. The last part will point out the importance of business ethic with a case study. 2. What is Business ethic. 2.1 Definition of business ethic. Business ethic has various meanings and it can be differ in different countries and from industry to industry.
It is 2 prose a set of moral value, standard, code of conduct in a business organization, for write a report example honesty, fairness and responsibility, which stipulate as a guideline to a law, regulation in a business organization. According to O.C Ferrell (2011), ‘Business ethics comprises the principles and questions essay standards that guide behaviour in 2010 essay, the world of business. Investors, employees, customers, interest groups, the legal system, and the community often determine whether a specific action is right or wrong, ethical or unethical. Although these groups are not necessarily ‘right,’ their judgments influence society’s acceptance or rejection of a business and its activities.’ (Ferrell,2011). And Kirk O. Questions 2 Prose Essay! Hanson (2010) identified that business ethics is the study of the standards of business behaviour which promote human welfare and the good.” (Kirk O. Hanson2010).Business ethics is a board topic and its include different perspective, such as the relationship between company and employees, company and customers and environmental issue. Business ethics on relationship between business organization and employees. Will be focus on this essay. 2.2 What is 2010 questions essay Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Corporate social responsibility is a common term which has a close relationship and links with the concept of essay business ethic. According to Lord Holme and Richard Watts (2000) , corporate social responsibility is the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the morley callaghan, quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large. 2 Prose Essay! ‘(Lord Holme and Richard Watts 2000) ‘CSR is on essay information not a function of business like accounting or marketing, it is a representation of the 2010 questions, soul of a business, like values or principles. It gets expressed through the many ways that firms engage their stakeholders, how they treat those around them and how they create a community that wants to support them.’ , said Joe Lawless(2012).
CSR also are reflected in a corporate policies and essay behaviours, for example how the company treats the stakeholders including employees, customer, supplier, community and environment ethically or in a responsible manner. 3. Business ethic on 2010 2 prose essay employees. 3.1 Justice and tuition assignments Fairness. Every company must have encounter of problem that how to motivate their employees. 2010! It consistently finds that employees are more motivated when they feel that organizational resources are allocated fairly, that organizational decisions are made in fairways, and that their organization treats them fairly. To determine is the corporation treats employees with fairness; there is two contextual forms to define the fairness in an organization, which are distributive fairness and morley essay procedural fairness.
Distributive fairness is based on the outcome and the perception of individuals assumes they deserve. For example, if inflation rises by questions 2 prose essay, 5% and incomes go up by believe essay, the same margin people will perceive it as a fair outcome (Terry, T., Dienhart, J. Essay! #038; Thomas, T. ,2008). Procedural fairness is concerning about the processes or procedure that create outcomes. Take hiring employees as an example. They evaluate the fairness in application, interview, and technology selection processes. Are those processes consistent over time and questions 2 prose the same among individuals and groups? Is it in quotations on essay, neutral and transparent situation? Take Primark as an example , it expressed their Code of 2010 questions 2 prose essay Conduct that any supplier making there items must pay laborers in any event the lowest pay permitted by law, as set by government. They deliberately vet each and every processing plant, checking wage and working hours records in 2010 2 prose essay, point of interest and address specialists themselves, in certainty, to confirm the information. (2015) 3.2 Human rights #038; Labour rights.
The United Nations, Office of the High Commissioner of 2010 questions Human Rights claimed that Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible. Labour rights are the term derived from Human rights, which represent the relation between employees and employers. It can be refer to the employers should respect the divertissant, rights of essay all person to life, security of the person and privacy, respect the right of their employees to join trade unions and to bargain collectively and 2 prose essay develop non discriminatory employees polices , and respect each person freedom of thought, religion, opinion and communication.( Joseph W.Weiss,2014) Labour rights are stipulate under the labour and employment law. Because of globalization, corporation are concerning more than before on ethical and humane when doing business in recently years. So the 2010 2 prose, issues of Labour rights such as child labour, setting the minimum wages and questions essay labour abuse are raising public awareness on business ethics factors of employees. In the office website of Primark stated that they are a subsidiary company of Associated British Food.
They advocate that child labour should not be used and they sanction its supplier to deliver their item when the checking of the manufacturing plant to questions, guarantee all the labourers are in a lawful working age. Furthermore, they attract with suppliers, workers and gatherings, serving to ensure that the upsides of adolescents’ preparation are gotten on. Two Fishermen! Besides, they advance program that on. raising public awareness of children rights. 2010 Questions 2 Prose! (2015) Working conditions contain of the degree of safety, danger, and hygiene of the environment and all circumstances that affect employees physical (health) and psychological in the workplace, including job hours, physical aspects, legal rights and responsibilities. I This! It also involved the implementation of safety training for employees and insurance schemes and safety guideline and policies to reduce the risk of questions employee might suffer. Working hours is the apologue, important factor of the productivity.
However, in order to reach the highest productivity and 2 prose essay efficiency, some companies abuse their workers with extremely long working hours. ‘[Companies should] provide a framework for regulated hours of quotations information technology work , daily and weekly rest periods, and annual holidays. These instruments ensure high productivity while safeguarding workers’ physical and mental health. Standards on part-time work have become increasingly important instruments for questions essay addressing such issues as job creation and promoting equality between men and believe i this women.’ claimed International labour organization (2014). Working hours can be varying in different countries, culture, gender, or age and 2010 2 prose other factors. According to International labour organization, table 1 illustrates the tuition available, legal working hour among five productive countries, such as Bangladesh, China, Germany, India, and United State (International labour organization,2014).
To treat employees ethically, maximum working hours must be compliance and concerned by every business corporation. Primark has a strict Code of 2010 2 prose essay Conduct that meets universal guidelines. Suppliers must take after this Code to guarantee items are made in i this, great working conditions, and the individuals making them are dealt with well and 2010 questions paid a reasonable pay. They vet each and two fishermen morley every manufacturing plant against the Code before they submit a request with a supplier.(2015) Table 1: Legal working hour in Bangladesh, China, Germany, India, United State (based on 2010 International Labour Organization, 2013) Bangladesh China Germany India United State. Daily hours limit(hour) 11 8 8 9 No federal statutory limit on daily working hours identified. Weekly hours limit(hour) 48 40 48 48 40. Last update 4 March 2011 1 April 2011 2012 14 May 2011 July 2012. 4. Importance of believe i this business ethic for a company. 4.1 Save money for questions 2 prose essay lawsuit, settlement, theft.
‘Study from Joseph W.Weiss found out that yearly business expense of interior misrepresentation range between the yearly gross domestic profit(GDP) of Bulgaria ($50 billion) and on essay information technology that of Taiwan ($400 billion) . It has likewise been assessed that fraud costs organizations $600 billion USD every year, and that 79% of 2010 questions labourers concede or to two fishermen morley callaghan essay, consider taking from their employers.() From this result, it illustrated that there is a significant portion of business profit annually that attributed to fraud from the workers. Because of that corporation might search for legal consultation in order to open lawsuit and spend money in settlement. Furthermore, corporation paid noteworthy penalties under the law for acting unethically. ” A loss of 2010 essay public confident can be detrimental to the firm’s and to its investor.’, said Joseph W.Weiss (Operating with business ethics is essential when cooperating with crucial players with these crucial players. It is common for the profitability of publicly traded companies to decline rapidly when they encounter situations where information regarding unethical behaviour is a report discovered. When a corporation was discovered that they do business unethically, usually they will do lot more advertising and 2010 2 prose essay promotion on who to write their business than before in order to hide the problem and divert the public’s attention, instead of stand in front to apologize and to correct the problem. However, it kind of action is actually ruin their brand imagine when the people do not think the corporation is responsible for the mistakes and the confidence will decrease. Negative reputation of a company may affect the corporation that the difficulty of recruit new employees and retained valued professionals.
4.3 Investor loyalty. ‘Business relationship based on mutual trust and ethical principle combined with regulation result in long term economic gains for organizations, shareholder, and stakeholders.’ , said Joseph W.Weiss (2014). Investment is the most importance factor that keeps company survives, because it maintains the liquidity of the company and retains company in 2010, high share price that protect it from takeover. However, at callaghan, the point when speculator certainty is questions lost, it can be a hard time for an organization to two fishermen morley essay, recover the trust of general society, its financial specialists and its important shareholders. Profitability may take years to develop once more. 4.4 Customer satisfaction. The business can remain on long-term benefits when it has good client connections. To keep up good relationship with clients, the questions 2 prose, business needs to grow genuine ethical code of conduct. The conduct of the representative towards the clients will have an effect on them.
They will build up an impression of the business which will make the essay, clients enhance their trust they have with the organization .The morals of the business will lead the organization to hold the trust its clients. Joseph W.Weiss stated that at the point when organization and partners base their transactions, procurements of administrations and items on good ethical standard and the production-oriented metrics, the greater profit levels of business and fulfilment of the partner increment, and people in general’s certainty likewise upgraded. (Joseph W.Weiss ,2014) .It is 2010 2 prose clear that the a report, profit of the company will definitely increase if all the stakeholders are supporting the business . And in 2 prose essay, the worker perspective, they are more productive when they are satisfied with the environment. 5. Case Study: Foxconn Suicide. Foxonn suicide was a tragedy of unethical business practise that happened in China. ‘Sweat factory ‘ Foxconn Technology Group is a Taiwanese multinational company with its main plant operating in tuition available, Shenzhen, China. Foxconn is hands down the largest manufacturing of 2010 2 prose electronic, computer and computer components in the world. They employ more than 800,000 workers , in which 500,000 labours manufacture for Apple Inc products, such as Iphone, IPad .Between 2010 and 2013, there is a string of suicide at Foxconn. At least 16 people have jumped from high buildings at the factory so far this year, with 12 deaths and a further 20 people were stopped by the company before they could attempt to kill themselves. According to the newspaper New York Times, Foxconn has a reputation for military-style efficiency that includes mapping out apologue divertissant assembly line workers movements in great detail and questions essay monitoring tasks with a stopwatch. A typical worker shares a dormitory room with nine other workers, eats in the campus cafeteria and works 11 to quotations on essay information, 13 hour shifts. Questions 2 Prose! Often they do little more than work and sleep.
Some have no friends on campus and do not even know the names of their roommates. Shortage of warm water in the dorm often meant cold showers, and where even simple pleasures like snacks were forbidden.(2010) . From the above information from the news , it can be seen that Foxconn were not treating their employees ethically regarding the working conditions and fairness. Many worker were working long hours for low pay under heavy pressure. Most of them work 40 extra hours of overtime each week and tuition available the monthly wage they got is only 950 RMB ($US140) that employees must work hours of overtime each day to make about questions, 2,000 RMB to meet basic needs. 5.3 Effect on Apple Inc. It was a catastrophe for Apple Inc when the news discovered that their manufacturer treated its employees unethically and inhumanely. Apple Inc share of stock dropped by tuition assignments available, 1.5%, which indicated that the stock traders were taking the tragedy seriously. That was a huge impact on 2010 Apple Inc’s profit and its brand imagine, because Apple Inc did not monitor its supplier running under the business ethical principles.
