Why Science Majors Change Their Minds (It’s Just So Darn Hard) LAST FALL, President Obama threw what was billed as the first White House Science Fair, a photo op in the gilt-mirrored State Dining Room. He tested a steering wheel designed by report middle schoolers to essay of reality shows detect distracted driving and independent, peeked inside a robot that plays soccer. It was meant as an inspirational moment: children, science is fun; work harder. Politicians and educators have been wringing their hands for years over test scores showing American students falling behind their counterparts in Slovenia and Singapore. How will the United States stack up against global rivals in innovation?

The president and objective, industry groups have called on colleges to graduate 10,000 more engineers a year and report, 100,000 new teachers with majors in STEM — science, technology, engineering and math. All the Sputnik-like urgency has put classrooms from kindergarten through 12th grade — the pipeline, as they call it — under a microscope. Book Reviews? And there are encouraging signs, with surveys showing the number of college freshmen interested in majoring in a STEM field on the rise. But, it turns out, middle and high school students are having most of the fun, building their erector sets and dropping eggs into water to test the independent report first law of essay on reality shows motion. The excitement quickly fades as students brush up against the reality of what David E. Reading Report? Goldberg, an book reviews emeritus engineering professor, calls “the math-science death march.” Freshmen in college wade through a blizzard of independent calculus, physics and chemistry in essay song hummingbird lecture halls with hundreds of other students. And then many wash out. Studies have found that roughly 40 percent of students planning engineering and independent book, science majors end up switching to contrast essay point method other subjects or failing to get any degree. That increases to as much as 60 percent when pre-medical students, who typically have the strongest SAT scores and independent book report, high school science preparation, are included, according to essay genetically modified new data from the University of report California at Los Angeles. That is twice the combined attrition rate of essay song all other majors.

For educators, the big question is how to keep the momentum being built in the lower grades from dissipating once the students get to college. “We’re losing an alarming proportion of our nation’s science talent once the students get to college,” says Mitchell J. Chang, an education professor at U.C.L.A. who has studied the matter. “It’s not just a K-12 preparation issue.” Professor Chang says that rather than losing mainly students from disadvantaged backgrounds or with lackluster records, the attrition rate can be higher at the most selective schools, where he believes the competition overwhelms even well-qualified students. “You’d like to think that since these institutions are getting the best students, the students who go there would have the best chances to reading book succeed,” he says. “But if you take two students who have the same high school grade-point average and SAT scores, and you put one in a highly selective school like Berkeley and the other in a school with lower average scores like Cal State, that Berkeley student is at point, least 13 percent less likely than the one at Cal State to finish a STEM degree.” The bulk of book attrition comes in engineering and among pre-med majors, who typically leave STEM fields if their hopes for medical school fade. There is essay genetically modified food, no doubt that the main majors are difficult and independent reading book report, growing more complex. Some students still lack math preparation or aren’t willing to work hard enough.

Other deterrents are the tough freshman classes, typically followed by two years of of reality fairly abstract courses leading to book report a senior research or design project. “It’s dry and hard to get through, so if you can create an oasis in there, it would be a good thing,” says Dr. Goldberg, who retired last year as an engineering professor at the University of point method Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is now an education consultant. He thinks the president’s chances of getting his 10,000 engineers is book, “essentially nil.” In September, the Association of American Universities, which represents 61 of the largest research institutions, announced a five-year initiative to encourage faculty members in the STEM fields to use more interactive teaching techniques. “There is a long way to go,” says Hunter R. Rawlings, the association’s president, “and there is an on reality shows urgent need to accelerate the independent report process of reform.” The latest research also suggests that there could be more subtle problems at work, like the proliferation of grade inflation in the humanities and resume objective, social sciences, which provides another incentive for reading report students to leave STEM majors. It is essay on reality of reality, no surprise that grades are lower in math and independent reading, science, where the answers are clear-cut and there are no bonus points for flair. Professors also say they are strict because science and engineering courses build on one another, and a student who fails to absorb the key lessons in resume one class will flounder in the next.

After studying nearly a decade of transcripts at one college, Kevin Rask, then a professor at Wake Forest University, concluded last year that the grades in the introductory math and science classes were among the lowest on campus. Independent Reading Book? The chemistry department gave the lowest grades over all, averaging 2.78 out of 4, followed by on reality of reality mathematics at 2.90. Education, language and independent, English courses had the highest averages, ranging from 3.33 to 3.36. Ben Ost, a doctoral student at of courage essay, Cornell, found in a similar study that STEM students are both “pulled away” by high grades in their courses in other fields and “pushed out” by reading report lower grades in their majors. MATTHEW MONIZ bailed out of engineering at Notre Dame in the fall of compare point point method his sophomore year. He had been the kind of book recruit most engineering departments dream about. He had scored an 800 in math on the SAT and in the 700s in both reading and essay hummingbird, writing.

He also had taken Calculus BC and five other Advanced Placement courses at a prep school in Washington, D.C., and had long planned to major in reading book report engineering. But as Mr. Moniz sat in his mechanics class in 2009, he realized he had already had enough. “I was trying to of reality memorize equations, and engineering’s all about the book application, which they really didn’t teach too well,” he says. “It was just like, ‘Do these practice problems, then you’re on your own.’ ” And as he looked ahead at the curriculum, he did not see much relief on the horizon. So Mr. Compare Point? Moniz, a 21-year-old who likes poetry and reading book, had enjoyed introductory psychology, switched to a double major in psychology and English, where the classes are “a lot more discussion based.” He will graduate in May and plans to be a clinical psychologist. Of his four freshman buddies at Notre Dame, one switched to business, another to music. One of the two who is still in engineering plans to work in finance after graduation.

Mr. The True Of Courage Essay? Moniz’s experience illustrates how some of the best-prepared students find engineering education too narrow and lacking the passion of other fields. They also see easier ways to make money. Notre Dame’s engineering dean, Peter Kilpatrick, will be the first to independent book report concede that sophomore and junior years, which focus mainly on theory, remain a “weak link” in technical education. He says his engineering school has gradually improved its retention rate over the past decade by creating design projects for freshmen and breaking “a deadly lecture” for 400 students into groups of sample 80. Only 50 to book report 55 percent of the compare contrast essay point school’s students stayed through graduation 10 years ago. But that figure now tops 75 percent, he says, and efforts to independent book report create more labs in the middle years could help raise it further. “We’re two years into genetically modified food, that experiment and, quite honestly, it’s probably going to take 5 to 10 years before we’re really able to inflesh the independent reading book report whole curriculum with this project-based learning,” Dean Kilpatrick says. No one doubts that students need a strong theoretical foundation.

But what frustrates education experts is essay hummingbird, how long it has taken for independent most schools to make changes. The National Science Board, a public advisory body, warned in the mid-1980s that students were losing sight of why they wanted to be scientists and engineers in the first place. Essay Genetically Modified Food? Research confirmed in the 1990s that students learn more by grappling with open-ended problems, like creating a computer game or designing an alternative energy system, than listening to lectures. While the reading book report National Science Foundation went on to finance pilot courses that employed interactive projects, when the money dried up, so did most of the courses. Lecture classes are far cheaper to essay song hummingbird produce, and top professors are focused on bringing in research grants, not teaching undergraduates. In 2005, the National Academy of Engineering concluded that “scattered interventions” had not resulted in widespread change. “Treating the independent reading freshman year as a ‘sink or swim’ experience and the true meaning essay, accepting attrition as inevitable,” it said, “is both unfair to students and wasteful of resources and faculty time.” Since becoming Notre Dame’s dean in 2008, Dr.

Kilpatrick has revamped and report, expanded a freshman design course that had gotten “a little bit stale.” The students now do four projects. Book Reviews? They build Lego robots and design bridges capable of carrying heavy loads at minimal cost. They also create electronic circuit boards and dream up a project of their own. “They learn how to work with their hands, how to program the robot and how to independent reading book work with design constraints,” he says. But he also says it’s inevitable that students will be lost. Some new students do not have a good feel for how deeply technical engineering is. Other bright students may have breezed through high school without developing disciplined habits.

By contrast, students in China and India focus relentlessly on the true, math and science from an early age. “We’re in a worldwide competition, and we’ve got to retain as many of our students as we can,” Dean Kilpatrick says. “But we’re not doing kids a favor if we’re not teaching them good life and study skills.” WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE, in independent reading book report Massachusetts, one of the nation’s oldest technological schools, has taken the idea of objective projects to heart. While it still expects students to push their way through standard engineering and science classes, it ripped up its traditional curriculum in the 1970s to make room for extensive research, design and social-service projects by juniors and seniors, including many conducted on trips with professors overseas. In 2007, it added optional first-year projects — which a quarter of its freshmen do — focused on world problems like hunger or disease. “That kind of independent reading book early engagement, and video book, letting them see they can work on something that is interesting and important, is reading book, a big deal,” says Arthur C. Heinricher, the dean of undergraduate studies. “That hooks students.” And so late this past summer, about 90 freshmen received e-mails asking if they typically received flu vaccines. The e-mails were not from the essay of reality shows health services office, but from students measuring how widely flu spreads at different rates of vaccination. Two of the students had spent part of their freshmen year researching diseases and devising a survey.

Now, as juniors, they were recruiting the newcomers to take part in simulations, using neon wristbands and stickers, to independent reading book track how many of them became “infected” as they mingled during orientation. Brenna Pugliese, one of the juniors and a biology major, says the two-day exercise raised awareness on campus of the book need for more students to get the vaccine. “I can honestly say that I learned more about various biology topics than I ever learned in any other class,” she says. Teachers say they have been surprised by the sophistication of some of the freshmen projects, like a device to harvest kinetic energy that is now being patented. But the main goals are to enable students to work closely with faculty members, build confidence and promote teamwork. Studies have shown that women, in particular, want to see their schoolwork is connected to helping people, and independent book report, the projects help them feel more comfortable in STEM fields, where men far outnumber women everywhere except in biology. Seventy-four percent of W.P.I. undergraduates earn bachelor’s degrees within four years and 80 percent by six years. Most of the top state research universities have added at least a splash of design work in song hummingbird the freshman year.

The University of Illinois began this fall to require freshmen engineering students to take a course on aspirations for the profession and encourages them to do a design project or take a leadership seminar. Most technical schools push students to seek summer internships and take semesters off to reading report gain practical work experiences. The hope is that the lure of high-paying jobs during an economic downturn will convince more students to stick with it. Some private schools have also adjusted their grading policies to objective ease some of the pressure on STEM students. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has long given freshmen only book, “pass” or “no record” grades in the first half of the year while they get used to the workload. W.P.I. lets undergraduates take up to three classes for which no grade is recorded if they would have received less than a C. Any required courses would have to be repeated. Ilea Graedel, a 20-year-old junior in aerospace engineering, says that policy provides “a nice buffer if you want to try something new, like a class outside your comfort zone.” But what really helps Ms. Graedel get through the rigors of STEM, she says, is hanging onto her aspirations. She grew up in genetically modified food a farming area in Washington State, the independent reading book only student from her high school class of 26 pursuing a technology degree.

She has wanted to be an astronaut since she was 3, when her mother took her to Boeing’s Museum of Flight in sample Seattle and bought her a book called “I Want to Be an Astronaut.” The space program has been sharply cut back. Still, she says, “I’m going to hold onto independent reading book that dream very dearly.” An article last Sunday about low attrition rates in science education misstated the surname of Notre Dame’s engineering dean at one point. As the article correctly noted elsewhere, he is Peter Kilpatrick, not Kirkpatrick. Christopher Drew covers military technology for The Times. A version of this article appears in print on on reality, November 6, 2011, on independent reading, Page ED16 of Education Life with the headline: Why Science Majors Change Their Mind.

a good essay plan Read the book report, topic and sample essay, then study the comments. Click on the highlighted text for hummingbird comments about reading book academic writing conventions; click on the notes in meaning of courage the margin for commentary on the essay. Birth rates are falling in developed countries. There is reading one simple reason for this - young people nowadays are just too selfish and too self-centred to have children. And this is particularly true of women. To what extent do you agree with this view? Support your argument with relevant readings and evidence. Countries in essay on reality of reality shows the developed world have seen a big shift in attitudes to population growth. Independent Reading Report. Several generations ago, it was generally believed that too many babies were being born, and that societies should try to reduce their populations. Nowadays, however, the concern is the reverse - that birthrates are falling too low and resume, that urgent action is independent needed to encourage people to have more children.

But what are the causes of essay hummingbird this trend? And how much are the attitudes and lifestyles of young people to blame? This essay will consider a number of explanations for the so-called baby crash. My argument will be that to independent book, hold young people responsible is neither valid nor helpful. The best explanation, I believe , is to be found in the condition of increased economic insecurity faced by essay on reality, the young. The birth rate has fallen dramatically in independent report many parts of the world. To take several examples, in Europe in 1960, the contrast essay point, total fertility rate (TFR) was about 2.6 births per female, but in 1996 it had fallen to report, 1.4 (Chesnais, 1998) . In many Asian countries, similar declines have been experienced. Japan now has a birthrate of only about 1.3, and Hong Kong#039;s has fallen to video book reviews, below 1.0 (Ichimura and Ogawa, 2000) . A TFR of below 2.0 means that a country#039;s population is not replaced, and thus there is a net population decline. This ageing of the population has the potential to create serious problems. Fewer children being born means that in the long term, a smaller proportion of the independent, populace will be economically productive, whilst a larger proportion will be old and economically dependent - in the form of pension, health care and other social services. Most experts agree that these greying societies will not be able escape serious social and economic decline in the future (Chesnais, 1998).

So what are the essay hummingbird, causes of this trend and what can be done to stop it? One common approach has been to lay the blame on young people and their supposedly self-centred values. Reading Book Report. It is argued that in the true of courage essay developed societies, we now live in independent book a post-materialist age, where individuals do not have to essay on reality shows, be so concerned about basic material conditions to survive (McDonald, 2000a). Thus people, especially the independent reading book report, young, have become more focussed on the values of self-realisation and the satisfaction of personal preferences, at the expense of traditional values like raising a family. A strong version of this view is put forward by Japanese sociologist, Masahiro Yamada (cited in resume objective Ashby, 2000) . Independent Reading Book Report. He uses the term parasite singles to refer to grown children in their 20s and 30s who have left school and are employed, but remain unmarried and continue live at home with their parents. These young people are spoilt, he says, and interested only in their own pleasure - mainly in the form of shopping.

According to Yamada , it is this focus on self, more than any other factor, that is responsible for Japan#039;s languishing birth rate (Ashby, 2000). In other developed countries, there is a similar tendency for the young to remain at home enjoying a single lifestyle - and a similar tendency for older people to interpret this as selfishness (McDonald, 2000a). But is it reasonable to attribute the baby crash to the pleasure-seeking values of the young? The problem with this view is that whenever young people are surveyed about their attitudes to family, not only do they say they want to have children, they also express preferences for family sizes that are, on average, above the genetically, replacement level (McDonald, 2000a). As an example, McDonald quotes an Australian study that found that women aged 20-24 expected to have an independent report average of 2.33 children in their lifetime. Findings like this suggest that the values of the young are not at the true meaning of courage, all incompatible with the idea of having a family. It seems then that, as young people progress through their twenties and thirties, they encounter obstacles along the way that prevent them from fulfilling their plans to be parents. Independent Reading Report. Some conservative thinkers believe the on reality shows, main obstacle is the changed role and status of women (eg. Norton, 2003). According to this view, because young women now have greater educational and career opportunities than in previous generations, they are finding the idea of family and motherhood less attractive.

Thus, educated middle class women are delaying marriage and childbirth or even rejecting motherhood altogether. It is reading report claimed that women#039;s improved status - which may be a good thing in itself - has had the sample resume objective, unfortunate consequence of threatening population stability. But there are several problems with this argument. For one, the lowest TFRs in Europe are found in Spain and Italy (around 1.2), both more traditional, male-oriented societies, which offer fewer opportunities to women. In comparison, Sweden which has been a leading country in advancing the rights of women enjoys a higher TFR (1.6 in 1996) - even though it is still below replacement. Chesnais (1998: p. 99) refers to this contrast as the independent, feminist paradox and concludes that empowerment of women [actually] ensures against the true meaning essay, a very low birth rate (my emphasis) . Another problem with trying to report, link improved education levels for meaning of courage essay women to low birth rates is that fertility in developed countries seems to be declining across all education and class levels.

In a recent survey of Australian census data, Birrell (2003) found that, whereas the non-tertiary-educated group was once very fertile, its rate of partnering is now converging towards that of reading book tertiary educated women. We can summarise the discussion to this point as follows: Young people today, in spite of of courage essay what#039;s said about their values, still express a desire to have children. However, few end up having as many as they say they would like. The improved education and career opportunities for women does not seem to be the decisive factor in reducing the number of book children that a woman has. These conclusions suggest that there must be something else involved. Many writers are now pointing to a different factor - the economic condition of young people and their growing sense of essay insecurity. Peter McDonald (2000a) in his article #039;Low fertility in Australia: Evidence, causes and independent reading book report, policy responses#039; discusses some of the things that a couple will consider when they are thinking of having a child. One type of thinking is what McDonald calls Rational Choice Theory, whereby a couple make an assessment of the relative costs and benefits associated with becoming a parent. In traditional societies, there has usually been an economic benefit in having children because they can be a source of labour to essay song, help the family.

In developed societies, however, children now constitute an economic cost, and so, it is argued, the benefits are more of a psychological kind - for example, enjoying the status of being a parent, having baby who will be fun and will grow up to love you, having offspring who will carry on the family name etc. The problem, McDonald suggests, is that for many couples nowadays the economic cost can easily outweigh any perceived psychological benefits. McDonald (2000b) discusses another type of decision-making - Risk Aversion Theory - which he says is also unfavourable to the birth rate. Independent. According to this theory, when we make important decisions in our lives life, if we perceive uncertainty in our environment, we usually err on the side of safety in order to avert risk. Essay. Birrell (2003) focuses on increased economic uncertainty for men.

Referring to the situation in Australia, he discusses men#039;s reluctance to form families in terms of perceived costs and risks: Many men are poor - in 2001, 42 per cent of men aged 25-44 earnt less than $32,000 a year. Only two-thirds of men in this age group were in full-time work. Young men considering marriage could hardly be unaware of the risks of marital breakdown or the long-term costs, especially when children are involved (Birrell, 2003: p.12). And Yuji Genda (2000) in Japan, responding to Yamada#039;s analysis of parasite singles, argues that the failure of young Japanese to leave home and start families is not due to self-indulgence, but is an understandable response to increasingly difficult economic circumstances. Genda (2000) notes that it is the young who have had to bear the video book reviews, brunt of the book report, decade long restructuring of the Japanese economy, with youth unemployment hovering around 10% and a marked reduction in of reality secure full-time jobs for independent reading the young. Young people around the compare point, world seem to have an increasing perception of economic uncertainty and contemplate something their parents would have found impossible - a decline in living standards over reading report their lifetime. According to song hummingbird, a 1990 American survey, two thirds of respondents in the 18-29 age group thought it would be more difficult for their generation to live as comfortably as previous generations (cited in Newman, 2000: p.505).

Furthermore, around 70% believed they would have difficulty purchasing a house, and around 50% were worried about their future. Findings like these suggest that the younger generation may be reluctant to have children, not because they have more exciting things to independent reading book, do, but because they have doubts about their capacity to video reviews, provide as parents. If we accept that economics has played a significant role in young people choosing to have fewer babies, then the key to reversing this trend is for governments to take action to remove this sense of insecurity. Reading Book Report. A number of policy approaches have been suggested. Some writers have focussed on the need for better welfare provisions for families - like paid parental leave, family allowances, access to child care, etc (Chesnais, 1998).

Others have called for more radical economic reforms that would increase job security and raise the living standards of the young (McDonald, 2000b). It is hard to know what remedies are needed. Essay. What seems clear, however, is that young people are most unlikely to reproduce simply because their elders have told them that it is selfish to do otherwise. Castigating the young will not have the independent reading book, effect of making them willing parents; instead it is likely to just make them increasingly resentful children. Ashby, J. (2000).
